Brooklyn Bridge Pedestrian Walkway

landmark

The elevated promenade you are currently walking on was built with a specific purpose that went far beyond mere utility. John Augustus Roebling, the bridge's original designer, insisted on including this dedicated walkway to provide the public with a vantage point unlike any other in the city. He intended for it to be a place for people to pause and appreciate the grand scale of the East River, turning a simple commute between two separate cities into a leisure activity. In the late nineteenth century, this act of walking for pleasure across the bridge became known as promenading, and it quickly established itself as a fashionable pastime for New Yorkers.
