Twin Towers

The architectural form of the twin towers was inspired by the medieval hill town of San Gimignano in Tuscany. Architect Minoru Yamasaki visited the Italian site and was struck by the way families competed for status by building taller and taller stone towers. He aimed to capture that same sense of power and vertical presence by creating two massive, identical structures that would define the skyline.
