Ground Zero

The ground you are walking toward rests on a man-made foundation created from over one million cubic yards of soil and rock. When developers built the original complex in the late nineteen sixties, they excavated this massive amount of material from the site to reach bedrock sixty-five feet below the surface. This discarded earth was not hauled away, but instead pushed into the Hudson River to expand the shoreline of Manhattan, eventually forming the land where the neighborhood of Battery Park City stands today.
