Fraunces Tavern

Fraunces Tavern is the oldest surviving building in Manhattan. Built in 1719 as a private home for merchant Stephen De Lancey, it was converted into a tavern by Samuel Fraunces in 1762. The structure sits on land that was once part of a late seventeenth-century landfill. Its long life has seen it function as everything from a high-end eatery for colonial elites to the site of intense political conflict.
