You are approaching a site that holds the footprints of the original Twin Towers, now defined by two massive, recessed reflecting pools. These pools represent the absence left by the destruction of the buildings. Each pool spans nearly an acre and features the largest man-made waterfalls in North America, with water constantly cascading thirty feet down the granite walls into a central void that seems to disappear into the earth. The sound of the falling water is engineered to mask the urban noise of the surrounding streets, creating a quiet sanctuary for visitors. Bronze panels line the edges of these pools, engraved with the names of every victim from the attacks on September 11, 2001, and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. These names are arranged using a system of meaningful adjacency, which groups individuals based on their relationships, where they were that day, or requests from their families to ensure colleagues and friends remain together.
