The original Chambers Street Ferry Terminal served as the critical gateway for the Erie Railroad during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It functioned as the primary connection between Manhattan and the railroad’s massive Pavonia Terminal on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River. Every day, thousands of commuters arrived at the New Jersey waterfront by train and completed their journey into the heart of New York City by boarding the Pavonia Ferry. The terminal became a center of intense activity where horse-drawn wagons, streetcars, and massive crowds of workers converged at the water's edge. By the 1940s and 1950s, an estimated twenty-five thousand passengers passed through the terminal daily. Despite this heavy traffic, the terminal's infrastructure struggled to keep pace with the growing city, leading to frequent public complaints about the small, aging ferryboats that struggled to accommodate rush-hour commuters. The decline of the ferry terminal was tied directly to the shift in how people moved across the region. As commuters began preferring rail tunnels that connected directly into Manhattan stations, the reliance on Hudson River ferries plummeted. The Erie Railroad eventually moved its operations to Hoboken, and the final ferry departed from the Chambers Street terminal in December 1958. Shortly thereafter, the city demolished the structure, and the land was eventually subsumed by the massive landfill project that created the Battery Park City neighborhood. The current Battery Park City Ferry Terminal is a marvel of modern engineering that sits a short distance from the historical site of the Erie Railroad's old ferry slips. This terminal is a floating structure, built to rise and fall with the tides rather than being anchored to the harbor floor in a traditional sense. Its massive hull was constructed in Texas and transported by sea to New York, where it was outfitted and moored into place to serve as the world's largest terminal of its kind. What makes this modern terminal particularly distinct is its reliance on two massive vertical towers. These towers are anchored deep into the bedrock seventy-five feet below the water's surface to keep the floating facility stable while allowing it to react to the shifting river levels. This engineering ensures that no matter the tide or the weather, the terminal provides a consistent connection for the commuters and sightseeing vessels that move through the harbor today.
