The building you are approaching is the real-life home of Hook and Ladder Company 8, a fully operational firehouse of the New York City Fire Department. While it is internationally recognized as the headquarters from the 1984 film Ghostbusters, the station has been an active part of this neighborhood since 1903. Its striking Beaux-Arts architecture, designed by the department's own superintendent at the time, was meant to bring a sense of civic grandeur to what was then a rapidly modernizing city. Even today, the firefighters who serve here balance their demanding emergency duties with the constant stream of visitors who arrive to see the site of their favorite cinematic haunt.
