Manhattan Bridge

The Manhattan Bridge was originally known simply as Bridge Number Three during its development. Construction began in nineteen-oh-one as a direct response to the intense overcrowding on the nearby Brooklyn Bridge. By the turn of the century, the older span was so jammed with horse-drawn carriages and trolley cars that city officials felt an urgent need for another crossing to handle the overflow of commuters moving between the boroughs.
