Building 92

Building 92 serves as the grand entrance to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, but its origins are rooted in a far more secluded era. It was designed in eighteen fifty-seven by Thomas Ustick Walter, the same architect who created the iconic cast-iron dome of the United States Capitol. Originally, the building functioned as the residence for the Marine Corps Commandant. It stood as the anchor of a three-and-a-half-acre military barracks complex, housing the officers tasked with guarding one of the nation's most vital shipbuilding sites. Today, it remains the last surviving structure from that original Marine complex.
