The Slipper Room

The Slipper Room stands on Orchard Street as a deliberate, modern revival of the variety theater tradition. When James and Camille Habacker founded the venue in 1999, they specifically designed it as a home for the burgeoning neo-burlesque community rather than repurposing an existing historic space. While its aesthetic channels the ornate velvet and gold of nineteenth-century European opera houses, the building itself is a product of the late twentieth century, built to offer performers a sanctuary where they could experiment without the pressures of mainstream commercial theater.
