The Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space is located in the storefront of a building known as C-Squat. This structure is a rare survivor of a time when the Lower East Side was defined by abandoned buildings and desperate struggle. While many similar buildings were demolished or converted into luxury apartments, C-Squat became one of the few former squats that successfully negotiated with the city to become a legal cooperative for its residents.
