Newtown Creek

Newtown Creek was once a pristine tidal stream, surrounded by lush marshes where oysters grew to the size of shoeboxes and deer wandered through nearby forests. Native Americans knew the waterway as Mispat, a term describing an overflowing tidal stream that mirrored the natural rhythm of the local landscape. By the mid-seventeenth century, European settlers arrived, transforming those wild shores into a series of farms and plantations that defined the region for nearly two hundred years. The original, winding course of the creek allowed for a vibrant, thriving ecosystem that bore no resemblance to the industrial channel visible today.
