The grid of the island was laid out in eighteen eleven with streets tilted twenty-nine degrees east of true north, which dictates these specific dates for the alignment. Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson coined the term after a youthful visit to Stonehenge inspired him to look at his home city through an astronomical lens. He realized the city's man-made canyons of brick and steel were acting like giant markers for the sun's path. While the city's planners never intended to create a solar observatory, the resulting phenomenon perfectly illustrates how nature and urban design intersect.
