Long Island City Courthouse

The Long Island City Courthouse stands as a reminder of a time when this neighborhood was the center of Queens County government. Built between eighteen seventy-two and eighteen seventy-six, the structure was strategically placed here because of its proximity to the growing web of railroad lines that defined the area in the late nineteenth century. Its establishment triggered local political battles that some historians believe contributed to the eventual separation of Nassau County from Queens. The building you see today rests on the foundations of the original, which was largely gutted by a fire in nineteen oh four that claimed the life of a responding firefighter.
