Roosevelt Island Tramway

The Roosevelt Island Tramway holds the distinction of being the first aerial commuter tramway in all of North America. When it opened in May of 1976, it was never intended to be a permanent fixture of the New York City skyline. City planners designed it as a temporary solution to bridge the transportation gap for residents while a subway line to the island was under construction. Despite the subway eventually opening in 1989, the tramway proved so popular for its unique, scenic commute that it was kept in operation long after its original purpose had been served.
