Strecker Memorial Laboratory

The Strecker Memorial Laboratory stands as a resilient relic of nineteenth-century medical ambition. Completed in 1892, this Romanesque Revival structure served as the first institution in the United States dedicated specifically to the study of pathology and bacteriology. Its construction was funded by the daughter of a man named Strecker, designed as a permanent tribute to her father. The building was strategically placed on what was then known as Blackwells Island, tucked away near the City Hospital to safely handle infectious materials while remaining accessible to the medical complex.
