St. Bartholomew's Church

St. Bartholomew's Church, known to locals as Saint Barts, occupies an entire block along Park Avenue. Its most striking feature is the triple portal at its main entrance. This limestone and marble archway was not built for this specific building. It was originally designed by architect Stanford White for the church's previous location on Madison Avenue and was carefully dismantled and reassembled here in 1918 to preserve its intricate stone carvings. The portal was commissioned as a memorial for Cornelius Vanderbilt the second, and its bronze doors feature elaborate biblical scenes that have greeted congregants for over a century.
