You are approaching a building that has served as a center for artistic rebellion since the nineteen seventies. Before it became a world-renowned contemporary art institution, this Romanesque Revival structure was known as Public School Number One, built in eighteen ninety-two to serve the children of Long Island City. After the school was decommissioned in nineteen sixty-three, the building sat largely abandoned and was eventually repurposed as a laboratory for experimental art. This transition from a rigid classroom setting to an open, creative workspace defines the character of the space today.
