Luminescence

Luminescence is a public art installation situated on the peninsula at Hunter's Point South Waterfront Park. It consists of seven massive concrete domes that represent the varying phases of the moon. Artist Nobuho Nagasawa designed the project to pay tribute to the way the moon governs the tidal rhythms of the East River. Each six-foot-wide dome is etched with precise topographic details like craters and valleys, pulled directly from actual NASA lunar survey data. The sculptures function as an outdoor observatory that connects the quiet natural cycles of the cosmos to the busy pace of the city skyline across the water.
