The Queensboro Bridge relies on a complex cantilever design rather than the suspension cables seen on other major East River crossings. This engineering choice allowed the bridge to bear the immense weight of the elevated railway lines and trolley tracks it once carried on its two levels. Engineers Gustav Lindenthal and Henry Hornbostel crafted the structure to hold its own weight through pure cantilever action, which was a highly experimental method at the time of its completion in nineteen hundred and nine. It stood as the longest cantilever span in the United States for over two decades, functioning as a massive steel machine that fundamentally connected the growing borough of Queens to the heart of Manhattan.
