The Sara Delano Roosevelt Memorial House stands at forty-seven and forty-nine East Sixty-fifth Street as a deliberate architectural illusion. While it appears to be a single, grand Neo-Georgian mansion, it was built in nineteen-oh-seven as two distinct, mirror-image residences behind a shared facade. Sara Delano Roosevelt commissioned the project as a wedding gift for her son, Franklin, and his wife, Eleanor. She occupied one side of the structure while the young couple lived in the other, and she ensured the design included connecting doors so she could move into their home whenever she pleased.
