Belvedere Castle

Calvert Vaux designed Belvedere Castle in eighteen sixty nine as a whimsical folly for the park. He intended the structure to be a Victorian scenic overlook rather than a functional fortress. The name itself translates from Italian to beautiful view, which reflects the original purpose of providing a vantage point over the Ramble and the Great Lawn.
