Bethesda Terrace and Fountain

Bethesda Terrace and Fountain serves as the architectural heart of Central Park. Designed by Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted, the terrace acts as a formal gathering space meant to contrast with the park's naturalistic landscapes. Construction began in eighteen fifty-nine, and despite the disruptions of the American Civil War, it remains one of the park's earliest and most significant completed structures. The design intentionally prioritizes the surrounding environment, following the philosophy of the designers who famously insisted on putting nature first, second, and third, with architecture following only after a while.
