The Bethesda Fountain serves as a grand monument to the arrival of clean water in New York City. Its centerpiece, a bronze statue called the Angel of the Waters, commemorates the 1842 opening of the Croton Aqueduct. Before this engineering feat, the city suffered through recurring and deadly outbreaks of water-borne diseases like cholera. By bringing fresh water from Westchester County, the aqueduct provided a literal lifeline that transformed the health of the entire city.
