When Andrew Carnegie moved here in 1902, he intentionally built his home far uptown, away from the typical residences of his peers. He referred to this quiet, undeveloped stretch of Manhattan as the Highlands of Fifth Avenue. The building itself was a marvel of its time, standing as the first private residence in the United States constructed with a structural steel frame.
