El Museo del Barrio

El Museo del Barrio began in nineteen sixty-nine as a direct response to the exclusion of Latino voices from New York City's major cultural institutions. A coalition of Puerto Rican parents, educators, artists, and community activists in East Harlem decided to create their own space instead of waiting for existing museums to recognize their contributions. They recruited the artist and educator Raphael Montañez Ortiz to help build a curriculum that would honor the heritage of the local community. The project quickly transformed from an educational initiative into a full-scale museum that prioritized the artistic expressions of those who lived in El Barrio. By establishing this institution, the founders insisted that their history and culture deserved preservation and public display on their own terms.
