Peace Fountain

The Peace Fountain stands as a forty-foot bronze monument commissioned in 1985 to mark the two hundredth anniversary of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. Created by the cathedral sculptor-in-residence Greg Wyatt, the structure weaves together contrasting elements to symbolize the reconciliation of opposing forces. You will see a central pedestal designed as a double helix, representing the molecular building blocks of life, topped by a giant crab that alludes to the origins of existence in the sea. This base supports a complex scene featuring the Archangel Michael in a dramatic triumph over Satan, whose decapitated figure is shown plunging into the depths below.
