North Woods and North Meadow

The North Woods and North Meadow occupy the northernmost section of Central Park, a landscape that remained largely untouched until the final phases of the park's construction. While the southern end of the park was developed in the eighteen fifties, the ground you are walking toward was not even fully acquired by the city until eighteen fifty-nine. At that time, this area was a rugged, rocky forest punctuated by deep, swampy ground, a terrain that landscape designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux ultimately transformed into a deliberate, scenic escape.
