Seneca Village Site

Established in eighteen twenty-five, this area served as a vital sanctuary for free Black New Yorkers who sought to escape the extreme racial discrimination and poor living conditions of downtown Manhattan. It grew into a remarkable middle-class enclave where people built their own homes, schools, and churches, creating a rare center of stability and autonomy during a tumultuous century.
