The Dakota

The Dakota stands as a monument to a time when the Upper West Side was considered a frontier. When developer Edward Clark commissioned this building in the late nineteenth century, the surrounding area was so sparsely populated and remote from the city center that locals joked it might as well have been built in the Dakota Territory. This sense of isolation eventually gave the building its famous name, though the structure itself was designed to offer the absolute height of urban comfort.
