Central Park Boathouse

The Loeb Boathouse stands as a modern successor to a much older vision. In the eighteen seventies, park co-designer Calvert Vaux created the first boathouse on this site, a wooden Victorian structure with ornate detailing and a second-story terrace designed specifically to offer visitors panoramic views of the Ramble. By the mid-twentieth century, that original building had fallen into severe disrepair, leading to its demolition and the construction of the current brick-and-limestone facility that opened in nineteen fifty-four.
