Firemen's Memorial

The Firemen's Memorial at one hundredth Street and Riverside Drive serves as a grand, Knoxville marble tribute to those who perished in what has been described as a war that never ends. It originated following the nineteen hundred and eight death of Deputy Fire Chief Charles Kruger, who drowned after the floor of a burning Canal Street basement collapsed beneath him. When the Right Reverend Henry Potter spoke at his funeral, he noted the lack of any local monument honoring the city's fallen firefighters, a sentiment that led to this site's creation by architect Harold Van Buren Magonigle and sculptor Attilio Piccirilli.
