Squadron A Armory

You are approaching the remaining facade of the Squadron A Armory, a structure that once dominated an entire city block between 94th and 95th Streets. In 1895, this site was transformed into a medieval-style fortress designed by architect John Rochester Thomas to house an elite cavalry unit known as Squadron A. These soldiers were originally a private social club of wealthy New York gentlemen who shared a passion for equestrian sports and modeled their dress uniforms after those of the London 10th Hussars. The armory served their dual needs perfectly, functioning as both a military training ground with roughly one hundred horse stalls and an exclusive venue for Saturday night polo matches and black-tie dances.
