Ward's Island Bridge

The Wards Island Bridge was designed by the acclaimed civil engineer Othmar Hermann Ammann. Ammann, who was also the mastermind behind the George Washington and Verrazzano-Narrows bridges, reportedly considered this footbridge one of his personal favorites. It stands as a rare example of a vertical lift bridge built exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists. When the center span needs to allow tall vessels to pass, the entire section rises straight into the air, a movement that remains a signature, if infrequent, mechanical feat for the structure.
