Henderson Place Historic District

The Henderson Place Historic District appears as a sudden, dollhouse-like retreat hidden away from the city's towering skyscrapers. Completed in eighteen eighty-two, this enclave consists of twenty-four surviving brick rowhouses that were designed as a single, cohesive project. The developer, John C. Henderson, commissioned the architectural firm Lamb and Rich to create a series of homes that felt like a unified village rather than standard city housing. While most of the Upper East Side was being transformed into large, five-story brownstones, Henderson chose to build smaller, three-story structures on modest plots. This design choice gave the entire district a distinct, romantic aesthetic that sets it apart from the surrounding neighborhood.
