Woolworth Mansion

Frank Winfield Woolworth commissioned this mansion as the centerpiece of a private family enclave. He hired the society architect Charles Pierpont Henry Gilbert to construct three adjacent townhouses between 1911 and 1915, one for each of his three daughters. This specific limestone building at 4 East 80th Street was designed for his eldest daughter, Helena Woolworth McCann. The architectural style is French Gothic Revival, featuring understated exterior details like carved woodland creatures, including frogs and squirrels, hidden around the entrance.
