Lucy Drexel Dahlgren, a wealthy socialite who had recently ended a high-profile, scandalous marriage, commissioned the home as a grand expression of her independent life in New York. Though she had the house built to her specifications, she eventually spent little time within its walls, preferring to travel between her homes in Europe and Newport.
