The building you are approaching is the Socony-Mobil Building, a landmark of mid-century corporate ambition completed in 1956. It was the first skyscraper in the world to feature a complete stainless steel exterior. Architects Harrison and Abramovitz covered the upper forty-two stories with over seven thousand embossed panels. These panels were press-formed into a trihedral pattern to prevent the metal from looking wavy and to help rain wash away dirt and grime naturally.
