Domino Sugar Refinery Shell

The Domino Sugar Refinery is a massive industrial monument that once defined the global sugar trade. Built in 1882 after a fire destroyed the earlier facilities on this site, the plant became the largest and most productive sugar refinery in the world. At its peak in the early twentieth century, the refinery processed nearly all of the sugar consumed in the United States, churning out four million pounds of the product every single day. The Havemeyer family, who owned and operated the site, became one of the wealthiest dynasties in American history through this massive output.
