Led Zeppelin Physical Graffiti Album Cover Location

The pair of brownstone buildings standing at ninety-six and ninety-eight Saint Marks Place earned their place in rock history as the cover subject for the nineteen seventy-five Led Zeppelin album Physical Graffiti. To capture the perfect image, designer Peter Corriston spent weeks wandering through Manhattan searching for a structure that was perfectly symmetrical and unobstructed. Once he selected these specific late nineteenth-century tenements, he made a calculated change to the composition. While the buildings actually stand five stories tall, he cropped out the entire fourth floor to ensure the façade fit the perfectly square proportions of a vinyl record jacket.
