For over a century, the site of Domino Park was the heart of the American Sugar Refining Company, which at its peak in the nineteen-twenties processed four million pounds of sugar every single day. This factory was so dominant that it refined nearly all of the sugar consumed in the United States, effectively turning the nation into a dependent of its output. The massive red-brick refinery that still looms over the park was once the tallest building in Brooklyn, standing as a monument to the Havemeyer family empire that built this massive operation in eighteen-eighty-two.
