Rivington Street municipal bath

The Rivington Street Municipal Bath stands as a relic of a time when basic hygiene was a significant public health challenge in New York City. Opening in nineteen hundred and one as the first municipally funded bathhouse in the city, it was built to serve the densely packed tenement neighborhoods of the Lower East Side. At that time, fewer than one percent of tenement apartments had private bathtubs, leading to widespread outbreaks of disease. This facility provided a critical, life-saving service by offering thousands of residents a place to bathe.
