Dixon Place (Open Channels New York, Inc)

Dixon Place began in 1985 not as a formal theater, but as a small artistic salon inside the private living room of its founder, Ellie Covan. She hosted performances in her apartment where she moved her furniture to create a makeshift stage and sold drinks and snacks to support the visiting artists. This domestic setting provided a rare, low-pressure sanctuary for performers to test radical ideas, develop new material, and build community. Today, it remains a landmark of the city's experimental scene, continuing the mission of providing a launchpad for artists to take risks and explore the creative process.
