9/11 Tiles for America Memorial

The Tiles for America Memorial began as a spontaneous response to the September eleventh attacks. Just one day after the tragedy, local potter Lorrie Veasey began crafting ceramic tiles painted with angels, American flags, and messages of hope in her nearby studio. She hung these first pieces on the chain-link fence surrounding an empty lot at the corner of Seventh Avenue South and Greenwich Avenue. This simple act invited others to participate, and over the following years, thousands of people from across the country sent their own hand-painted tiles to be added to the fence. The site transformed into a collective, grassroots tribute where the community could process their grief and honor the lives lost.
