Franziskuspforte (Stadttor)

The Franziskuspforte sits as a narrow, arched passage cut directly into the side of the dense stone wall at the base of the Hohensalzburg Fortress. It takes its name from the nearby Franciscan Church, serving as one of the oldest pedestrian routes connecting the bustling heart of Salzburg to the residential districts huddled beneath the cliff. In sixteen forty-three, the city governor Elias von Khuenburg ordered this opening carved through the solid rock to provide a shortcut for the monks and local residents.
