The bronze statue of Maximo Gomez stands atop a tall marble pedestal, the general pulling back on the reins of his horse as if halting an army. Commissioned in nineteen thirty-five, the monument honors the Dominican-born leader of the Cuban Liberation Army who guided the country toward independence from Spain. During the unveiling, organizers placed a time capsule beneath the base filled with documents from the war. A stray dog often sleeps in the shade cast by the horse’s heavy iron belly.
