Bibliothèque Mazarine

The Bibliothèque Mazarine occupies the left wing of the Institut de France, distinguished by a massive, weathered dome that dominates the skyline along the Seine. Cardinal Mazarin founded this library in the seventeenth century, filling it with tens of thousands of books from his private collection. During the revolution, the library remained open, absorbing confiscated manuscripts from private estates. Today, wooden ladders still slide along original oak shelves, housing centuries of French intellectual history inside a space built for a king's minister.
