Sainte-Chapelle sits on the Île de la Cité, distinguished by a narrow, delicate spire that reaches nearly two hundred fifty feet into the air. King Louis the Ninth built this royal chapel in the mid thirteenth century to house his collection of holy relics, including what he believed to be the Crown of Thorns. He paid more for the relics than for the construction of the building itself. The structure acts as a massive stone reliquary designed to contain these sacred items.
