The Luxembourg Palace features a rusticated stone facade modeled after the Pitti Palace in Florence. Marie de Medici commissioned this residence in sixteen twelve to recreate the architectural style of her Italian childhood. During the French Revolution, the building served as a prison, housing figures like Camille Desmoulins and Thomas Paine. Today, the French Senate occupies the halls. In the nineteen forties, the German Luftwaffe used the palace as their regional headquarters, stripping the interior of its gold leaf and fine art.
