The Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel stands as a marble and limestone gate topped by a bronze chariot pulled by four gilded horses. Napoleon Bonaparte commissioned this arch in eighteen oh six to celebrate his victory at the Battle of Austerlitz. He demanded it mimic the Arch of Constantine in Rome, even ordering the original horses from Saint Marks Basilica in Venice to be hauled to Paris. Those horses sat on top for years until the Austrians took them back after his final defeat.
